A 541-foot (165-meter) megayacht may seem the realm of fantasy. And it is, if from the drawing tables of some designers hoping to break into the yachting industry. But the 165m proposal from Nauta Yachts is based on the studio’s real-world experience. That experience, of course, includes an even larger megayacht: the 591-foot (180-meter) Azzam.
If Azzam was your first introduction to Nauta Yachts, you may be surprised to learn the Milan-based company’s backstory. Nauta Yachts opened its doors in 1985 as a builder. The team decided to switch from construction to design, consultancy, and project management in 1994.
The Nauta Yachts 165m encompasses seven decks, nicely balanced. (If you take a close look at the mast, it’s directly on centerline.) With a 69-foot (21-meter) beam, she has nearly the same amount of interior space devoted to the owner’s party as she does the crew. For example, the Nauta Yachts 165m has about 21,958 square feet (2,040 square meters) of saloons, staterooms, and entertainment areas like a cinema, wellness suite, and even a casino. Crew’s quarters and service areas, including the galley, comprise 21,420 square feet (1,990 square meters). The crew further have two elevators for their varying needs; guests get three.
Naturally, each decks aboard the Nauta Yachts 165m features the current (and welcome) trends of large ports and indoor-outdoor spaces. Nauta Yachts also arranged the megayacht so that different decks are devoted to different functions. The crew, and other staff (say, personal assistants) are housed primarily in 30 staterooms forward on the lower decks. Add the captain to the operations total, and there are accommodations for up to 64. Guests’ staterooms are split between the forward portions of the main and upper decks. The Nauta Yachts 165m provides two suites and seven staterooms, all with fixed balconies, on the main deck. While the six guest staterooms on the upper deck don’t have balconies, they do lead to an observation area. This observation room is rimmed with large ports, overlooking the bow and each side. It also connects via a spiral staircase to the VIPs and guests on the main deck, so that they’re not left out.
The fifth deck aboard the Nauta Yachts 165m is solely for the owners, should they so wish. For business meetings, a conference room can be configured. The design studio also envisions a private gym, saloon, dining room, and alfresco area, the latter comprising 3,229 square feet (300 square meters).
For the enjoyment of the entire owner’s party, the Nauta Yachts 165m has a sauna, hammam, massage area, and beauty salon in a wellness area aft on the lower deck. The previously mentioned casino is down here, too. Opening terraces and tender-boarding areas are separate from the swim platform, the latter created when the transom folds down. And forget a beach club, the Nauta Yachts 165m has what’s called a Sea Lounge: a disco with a DJ console and bar.
While the heli hangar at the bow is impressive, as is the tender garage for a submarine, the Nauta Yachts 165m impresses more for her anticipated performance. The designers have specified diesel-electric propulsion, even fuel cells, for efficiency. A 20-knot top end would be possible, based on computational fluid dynamic studies. At 15 knots, the Nauta Yachts 165m could see a 6,000-nautical-mile range, too.
The Nauta Yachts 165m is designed to comply with the Passenger Yacht Code and Lloyds classification.
The only cause for concern: The 18-foot (5.5-meter) draft and massive LOA would pose a problem for many megayacht marinas. Then again, buyers attracted to the Nauta Yachts 165m probably don’t want to be surrounded by a crowd.
